News Update – August 6

Hi Everyone:

Happy Independence Day to all our Jamaican members!

To our Students:

Students sitting SOA Exams

Last month, we announced that the CAA had engaged the SOA to work together towards a solution that ensures that Caribbean actuarial candidates would not be disadvantaged when all SOA examinations are moved to computer-based testing (CBT) in Fall 2020.

We are happy to confirm that a policy has been crafted to strike the correct balance between providing candidates with access to the exam without undue financial and logistical obstacles while providing the appropriate the level of exam security to ensure fairness to all candidates and as well as supporting the validity of examination results.

Formal communication will be published by the SOA with details of the new policy being implemented for Caribbean Students.

We will continue to engage and support the SOA in implementing this initiative.

Students sitting CAS Exams

The US Casualty Actuarial Society is moving to Computer Based Testing using Pearson Vue approved sites.  There are such sites in Jamaica and Trinidad.  We would like to know if you or anyone you know is a CAS student in any other Caribbean territory.  We will then work with the CAS on your behalf to see what can be arranged.

All Members

CAA CPD attestation closes tomorrow, 31st July!

All Ordinary, Affiliate and Associate Members of the Caribbean Actuarial Association are required to do Continuing Professional Development. This requirement became effective 1st January 2010. Attestation is done online by logging into our website.

The Caribbean Actuarial Association’s requirements for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by its Members are the same as the requirements for Continuing Professional Development of the professional body through which the Member attained full qualification as an Actuary or through which the Member has pursued or is pursuing actuarial examinations, or which the Board of Directors has approved. Members who are Category 3, partially regulated members, of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) must comply with the CPD requirements applicable to Category 2 members of the IFoA.

IFoA members please note: Changes made by the IFoA to their CPD requirements this year do not apply to your CAA attestation being made for 2019.

Members who do not attest by 31st July will be recorded as non-compliant and this status will appear in the membership directory on our website. They will also be required to inform those relying on their actuarial expertise that they are not compliant with the CAA CPD Policy.

Details of the SOA’s move to Computer Based Testing.

CAS is also moving to Computer Based Testing.

The IFoA’s new CPD Scheme will come into effect shortly. From 1st September, there will no longer be different membership categories for the purposes of CPD. All Members will be subject to the same requirements in terms of the CPD scheme (including a requirement for 15 hours of CPD) unless they qualify as exempt.

The new CPD Scheme applies to all Members except:

    Student Members;

    QAS Members; and

    Non-Practising Members

On 9th July 1970, R. Watson & Sons, a UK firm of consulting actuaries, started a branch office in Jamaica.  In the intervening years the company grew through changes in name and partnerships, becoming Duggan Consulting Limited on 1st July 2003.

News Update – July 9

An Important Message for All Students sitting SOA Exams

Dear Students,

In June 2020, the Society of Actuaries (S0A) announced that all examinations will be moving to a computer-based testing (CBT) approach beginning with the Fall 2020 exams.

We know that many of our actuarial students are SOA candidates and will be impacted by this change. The move to full CBT exacerbates the known problem of limited SOA exam centres available to candidates in the Caribbean. The only Prometric CBT centre within the CAA community is in Trinidad. The existing SOA paper-based locations are in Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda and Jamaica.

The SOA is aware of the geographical challenges in the Caribbean and the specific issues that their recent decision to convert the majority of their exams to computer-based delivery from October 2020 will cause. The CAA has engaged the SOA and we will be working together towards a solution that ensures that Caribbean actuarial candidates are not disadvantaged.

We will aim to provide an update on our progress by the end of July 2020.

News Update – July 2

Hi Everyone,

A winner has been selected for our Conference Theme Competition! Congratulations to Brian Blake of Kingston, Jamaica who submitted the winning entry: Today’s Actuary – Virtually Everywhere.

Our 2020 Virtual Conference will consist of two parts:

Several pre-recorded sessions uploaded in the weeks leading up to our normal conference dates.

Two live sessions every day from 30th November to 4th December.

We’ll shortly be issuing a Call for Speakers for our 2020 Virtual Conference. Keeping in mind our theme, Today’s Actuary – Virtually Everywhere, what topics would you like to see included? Please drop us a line at caa.secretariat@gmail.com.
