CAA Weekly News Update – 10th June

Last Monday, the CAA presented Climate Change: Emerging Risks and Opportunities with speakers Craig Johnson and Michael Tencer and an introduction by Avinash Persaud, Chairman of the CARICOM Commission on the Economy. A CAA contingent, led by President Simone Brathwaite and Past President Kyle Rudden, is now attending the 6th African Actuarial Congress in Ghana. Speakers on Day 2 included Stokeley Smart, Head of the Actuarial Science Programme at UWI, St. Augistine, and a CAA member. Stokeley’s presentation, Beyond the Formulae: Inorporating Modelling and Analytics Content in Actuarial Courses at the University of the West Indies, starts 42 minutes into the recording.

Hearty Congratulations to Barbados P.M. Mia Mottley on making Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2022. Our Caribbean Climate Champion makes her voice, and ours, heard more and more every day.

SAVE THE DATE: CAA CONFERENCE 2022 – 7th-9th DECEMBER in BARBADOS

The Actuary has featured Caribbean Stars, Andrew Long and Norbert Fullerton, and their Actuarial Scholarship offered in partnership with the IFoA Foundation. The Scholarship is  tenable at the University of the West Indies. Similar UWI scholarships include the Insurance Association of the Caribbean Scholarship, Mike McLaughlin’s Caribbean Actuarial Scholarship and, of course, the CAA’s own Stephen Alleyne Memorial Scholarship.

CAA Weekly News Update -1st April

Our webinar last Wednesday was a great success with attendees from among our membership, the banking community and other non-actuaries and non-bankers. We heard from actuaries working in the banking sector in the Caribbean and South Africa as well as several other engaging speakers. The full recording of Episode 12 Diversity of Thought: Opportunities for Actuaries in Banking will shortly be available on actuview.

Last Sunday’s webinar geared towards Actuarial Students was also very successful. Attendees included not only students from regional high schools and universities but some from outside the region. The recording will soon be available on our YouTube channel.

BIBA’s Barbados Risk & Insurance Management (BRIM) Conference

takes place next Monday and Tuesday, 21st & 22nd March. Several senior CAA members are participating in the event. On day two our President Simone Brathwaite participates in the panel discussion Captive Fundamentals in Business Planning. Later the same day Alison Rose will give an IFRS 17 Update then Lisa Wade and Stephen Robinson join a panel to speak on The Evolving Business of Pensions. There are also several other familiar names on the programme.
